Sweetness vs Sugar

Sweetness vs Sugar

Lets face it, flavour does matter, but so does our blood sugar regulation, energy and metabolism.

From our morning coffee to our afternoon snack, or even a home made treat - the sweeteners we use can make a big difference to our health and goals, and the way we feel each day.

Below we quickly go through the best sweetener options for Paleo, Low Carb and Keto. The good news is that they are mostly all interchangeable, its just the flavour that differs. But I always like to say - if you are reducing you sugar intake for health or lifestyle reasons, then the flavour of your sweetener shouldn't take priority over your health or goals.

Whether you are paleo, keto or just going low-carb, here are my top tips for making sweeteners work for you.

My 10 week program also gives you the option to choose either Paleo or Low Carb Keto meal plans so that you can easily control your sugars and carbs whilst also having the flexibility to swap at any point. The best part is that just by following the meal plan you will easily notice the incredible effects! To start your gut healing journey, join Luke Hines 10 today.

The 3 sweetener categories

  • 1. Paleo

The best Paleo sweeteners include nutrient dense natural sugars like maple syrup, raw honey and coconut sugar/nectar, or even rice malt syrup. These sweeteners are perfect for those who aren't too worried about their sugar or carb intake.

Whether you consider yourself Paleo, primal, whole-food focussed or just healthy, these are the better sweeteners to choose due to their high mineral, vitamin and antioxidant content. Though I do advise enjoying them in moderation as they are still sugars and will affect our energy and blood sugar regulation.

  • 2. Low Carb

To me, being Low carb is simply being more conscious of your sugar intake and limiting it but without being strictly Keto. In the Low Carb category we can enjoy the paleo sweeteners in smaller amounts and less often, whilst also looking at things like the sugar-free sweeteners. Sugar-free sweeteners include monk fruit, erythritol and stevia.

In this category, the flexibility allows us to still enjoy some of our favourite flavours in moderation.

  • 3. Keto

Here is where we aim to eliminate all of the blood-sugar spiking effects of the Paleo sweeteners and we we strictly stick to the zero-sugar sweeteners. Keto sweeteners include monk fruit, erythritol and stevia.

Those following a Keto Lifestyle or needing to regulate their blood sugars will be in this category.

Whilst Xylitol is also a sugar-free sweetener, I don't advise it if you have pets, or family with pets as it is unfortunately lethal for dogs. It can also cause bloating for us too.
